free seeds, seedlings (when we get them), and even some growing pots

South Benton Food Pantry is empowering the community to directly address local food insecurity with its “Grow a Row” initiative, which is especially crucial in light of recent USDA cutbacks to grants and farmers.

To make participation even easier, the Food Pantry is now offering free seeds, seedlings (when we get them), and even some growing pots to residents who want to get involved.

This initiative encourages both seasoned gardeners and those with limited space to contribute. Local farmers already tending gardens are invited to dedicate an extra row of their crops to the Food Pantry.

For those with smaller living spaces, the Food Pantry hopes they will consider growing a pot or two of vegetables or herbs for their own enjoyment, and if they have any extra, to bring it to the South Benton Food Pantry during normal distribution hours.

“We understand that not everyone has a large garden, but every little bit helps,” says Robin Frojen, the contact person for the “Grow a Row” initiative. “By providing seeds, seedlings, and pots, we hope to remove barriers and enable more people to participate, whether it’s planting an extra row in a large garden or nurturing a single pot on a balcony.”

The produce grown through “Grow a Row” will directly benefit individuals and families relying on the South Benton Food Pantry. Donations of fresh, homegrown fruits, vegetables, and herbs can be dropped off at the Food Pantry during its regular distribution times: Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m. to noon, except 3rd Thursday is 4 pm to 6 pm.

South Benton Food Pantry is committed to sharing any surplus produce with other food insecurity agencies and meal sites in the region. This collaborative effort not only aims to increase the availability of nutritious food but also to foster a stronger sense of community and shared responsibility. By providing the initial resources, the South Benton Food Pantry hopes to cultivate a widespread spirit of giving and growth throughout the south county.
